This helpful recipe from Pit Boss shows you to grill your steak hot and fast at 400F – cooking your steak for around 5-7 minutes per side for medium.

This recipe from Masterbuilt shows you a great to cook steak on your pellet grills.

You smoke the steak for a short while at a low temperature to impart smoke, and then you finish it off by searing the steak on hot grills or a hot pan. This allows you the best of 2 worlds – you get a good smoke flavour, but you also get a nice crust and sear on your meat as well.

How Long to Cook Steaks on a Pellet Grill?

If you want to grill steaks hot and fast on the pellet grills, set the temperature to high heat (around 450F) and cook the steaks for 4-6 minutes per side for rare and 6-8 minutes for medium.

If you want to smoke the steak slow and low to infuse flavour, most cuts will take an initial 45 minutes or so at 225F (107C) with a final sear at high heat for 1-2 minutes a side.

The most reliable way to know if your steak is cooked is the internal temperature not timings – see the infographic above to help.

What Temperature do you Cook Steak on a Pellet Grill?

If you want to grill your steak hot and fast on the pellet grills you will need a high heat of at least 450F (232C).

If you want to smoke the steak first and then reverse sear it at the end set your pellet grill to 225F (107C), smoke the steak for around 45 minutes, increase the heat to at least 450F (232C) and sear the smoked steak on both sides.

Are Pellet Grills Good for Steaks?

Pellet grills are great for cooking steaks, giving you the option of smoking steaks slow and low at a consistent heat instead of just grilling them.

The ‘set it and forget it’ nature of wood pellet grills allows a great deal of control over the smoking or grilling process.

How Long to Cook Steak On Traeger at 350F?

Depending on the size of your steak, it will take around 35-45 minutes to smoke it at 350F before finishing it off by searing at high heat for a final 1-2 minutes a side.

If you are smoking steaks in your Traeger at 250F it will take somewhere between 45minutes to an hour for the initial smoke.

Turn your Traeger up to a high heat of at least 450F and finish them off with a reverse sear for 1-2 minutes a side.
